Major Depression Symptoms

What is major depression and what are the symptoms?Major depression is a form of depression that has one of the most recognizable symptoms -- that of overwhelming sadness. A major depression symptom is when a person fails to take pleasure in activities that once they enjoyed. It usually comes on between the ages of 25 and 44, but it has been known to show up in individuals much younger than that and much older.

Another major depression symptom is a loss of appetite. When a person stops eating and finds the thought of food to be unappetizing, this can be an indication that there is a serious underlying problem that needs to be addressed.

Loss of concentration is another major depression symptom. When a person suffers from major depression, they find themselves having difficulty in focusing their mental energies in any one direction. Some have described it as "drowning while you're out of the water." It can be an overwhelming sensation and one that should not be ignored.

Another major depression symptom is insomnia on a regular basis -- usually every day. The person suffering from major depression simply lies in bed and is unable to allow themselves the luxury of sleep.

One serious major depression symptom that should be overlooked are thoughts of death. This is usually more than just not having a fear of dying. It usually deals with vague plans for death that need to be addressed.

Yet another major depression symptom can be extreme agitation. This is where a person literally can't seem to calm down, no matter what they try to do. On the flip side, it has been shown that the opposite major depression symptom has been observed -- one where an individual just seems to "slow down" and can't ever get back up to speed.

What should a person do if they find themselves with major depression symptoms?

The first course of action is to find out if there is a medical reason for what they are experiencing. Some of the major depression symptoms can be found in physical ailments that need to be addressed. Therefore, the individual needs to determine just what might be causing the major depression symptoms to appear.

Once that happens -- and if there is no physical cause linked to the situation -- there are other aspects that can be examined.

A person can find a great deal of relief through holistic means, it's been shown. In other words, a person suffering from major depression can find ways to heal themselves naturally and without the use of drugs. In the past, when a major depression symptom appeared, the individual would go to a doctor who would prescribe some sort of drug that would alleviate the major depression symptom, but would ignore the problem.

Major depression is a serious problem and it needs to be addressed as soon as an individual finds themselves in a position where they can get some help. If a person has a major depression symptom (and especially more than one), that person should determine -- as soon as possible -- what treatment to get and should start immediately.

It should never be ignored.
